‘Getting’ contemporary art: it’s not always the garbage it might appear to be. This article shows how to penetrate the fog surrounding modern artworks — often perpetuated by the artists themselves — so that these creations can be enjoyed for the strange and unsettling narratives they present. Modern contemporary art is essentially ‘narrative’ as opposed to ‘aesthetic’ (ie concerned with beauty and technically skilful crafting), and once that is understood, the rest follows easily. Contemporary artworks can then be judged objectively, in terms of the strength of their narrative content.
