I think artwork details can be used as a scaffold on which to attempt to hang an experience of the work as a whole (its ‘meaning, as it were), but if you get fixated on the details (see Rosalind Krauss doing ‘close readings’ of Cindy’s works) then you lose the whole thing completely. Really good contemporary artworks (Warhol, Beuys, Sherman etc) are not crossword puzzles or brain teasers, they are experiences.
